As part of a new office and warehousing construction project, Fast-Protect was asked to supply cycle storage suitable to contribute to the building’s BREEAM sustainability targets.

Cycle Storage Solutions

Rather than an elaborate cycle storage hub, the project called for a simple, economical, minimal footprint solution.

Key requirements were to provide covered and secure cycle parking with enough spaces to accommodate for the size of the building and staff numbers.

To meet these requirements we provided two separate Omnium Cycle Shelter units, with extensions and cycle hoops to provide 52 cycle parking spaces.

Omnium Shelters & Cycle Hoops

The Omnium Cycle Shelters are standard products in the Fast-Protect range.

They are the core, cost-effective solution to providing no frills cycle storage.

Infinitely extendable, the modular design can be built up to provide as many cycle parking spaces as a project could need.

4mm UV stabalised PETg cladding provides cover against the weather, and 48.3mm diameter ground fixed steel cycle hoops provide a solid fixing point for locking up bicycles.

For this project, a black semi matt powder coated finish was chosen for contemporary look inline with the new office buildings.

How do our shelters provide BREEAM sustainability credits?

BREEAM is a globally recognised sustainability assessment method for buildings, evaluating the environmental, social, and economic impact of a project.

The BREEAM assessment views cycle shelters as a way to encourage cycle use versus motorised transport.

The inclusion of cycle shelters with a new building encourages cycle use by providing protected, convenient, and secure cycle storage on the site, which aims to reduce the building’s impact on the local environment through reduced road network congestion and vehicle emissions.

Guidance on what is required from a cycle shelter to contribute to credits for a higher BREEAM rating include providing secure storage spaces which are protected from the weather, so a fixed point to lock bicycles (such as a ground fixed cycle hoop), and overhead cover are essential.

The cycle shelters also need to be positioned in a convenient place for all staff and visitors to encourage maximum use, ideally near building entrances, and in well lit areas monitored by security systems to deter theft or vandalism.
